The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the cathedral and is known throughout the world for its unintentional tilt on one side; the tower’s tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on soil that was too soft on one side to adequately support the weight of the structure; the tilt increased in the decades preceding the completion of the structure and gradually became more pronounced until the structure was stabilised (and the tilt partially corrected) thanks to the efforts made in the late 20th and early 21st century.
Manarola
Manarola is an urban jewel, full of typical Genoese-style tower-houses, and was founded in the 12th century; the village probably derives its name from an ancient ‘magna roea’, a large mill wheel in the village.
Portofino
Portofino and its world-famous natural bay. Don’t miss the Church of San Martino, built in the 12th century in Lombard Romanesque style and then completely renovated in the 17th century. The most beautiful part of the church is the splendid modern bronze door, by Mongini, depicting a miraculous event when St George protected Portofino from pirate attack by unleashing a storm off the bay.
