Mosè_Michelangelo_Roma

The Basilica of St. Peter in Vincoli, also known as the Basilica Eudossiana, off the normal tourist track is home to an extraordinary work by Michelangelo. In the right transept is the Tomb of Pope Julius II from which stands Moses, the imposing marble sculpture of over 2 metres in height, which depicts the prophet with a stern, sullen and proud gaze. Legend has it that when Michelangelo finished the statue and contemplated its perfection, he exclaimed, “Why don’t you speak?”

San_Paolo_fuori_le_Mura_Roma

The Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four papal basilicas, second in size only to St Peter’s in the Vatican and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a Latin cross plan with five naves and 20 granite columns, above the arches of which are portraits of all the popes from St Peter to Pope Francis. Also magnificent is the upper part of the outer façade, entirely in mosaic with a gold background reproducing the 4 prophets of the Old Testament
