Padova

Padua
Padua Urbs Picta, the painted city, the city of the fresco. The great master Giotto and his followers literally transformed this city into a fresco. The extraordinary pictorial cycle of the Scrovegni Chapel is the highlight of an absolutely unique and unmissable itinerary that is completed by the Palazzo della Ragione and the Church of the Eremitani.

Padua is not a city for those who love the merry life; it would be the same as wanting to dance in the basement of a cemetery.

The Scrovegni Chapel
Cappella_degli_Scrovegni

Dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità, was frescoed between 1303 and 1305 by Giotto, commissioned by Enrico degli Scrovegni, one of the most important masterpieces of western art. The frescoes, which narrate events from the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ, cover the entire walls. On the wall opposite the altar is the grandiose Last Judgement, which concludes the story of human salvation.
The Palazzo della Ragione
Padova_Palazzo_della_Ragione

The Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the 13th century, was the seat of the market, town hall and justice in medieval times. Inside is a gigantic wooden horse built in 1466, modelled on Donatello’s equestrian statue of Gattamelata. The four walls of the Great Hall are entirely occupied by frescoes dating back to the 15th century.
L'Orto Botanico
Orto_Botanico_Padova

An extraordinary experience is the Orto Botanico, the oldest academic botanical garden in the world, still in its original location. Founded in 1545 by the Republic of Venice, the oldest plant is a palm tree planted in 1585 called ‘Goethe’s Palm’, because the poet referred to it in his essay ‘Geschichte meines botanisches Studiums’.
The Villas of the Brenta
Villa_Pisani

Along the Brenta, the river that flows near Padua and flows into the Venetian lagoon, are numerous magnificent villas built from the 15th century onwards by noble Venetian families. Villa Pisani in Strà (now a National Museum), Villa Widmann Foscari and Villa Malcontenta, designed by Andrea Palladio in 1559, are the most famous.
