The Castle of Miramare

Built between 1856 and 1860 as the residence of Maximilian of Habsburg, the ground floor housed the private flats of Maximilian and his consort Charlotte of Belgium while the upper floor was the state quarters, lavishly adorned with ornaments and tapestries bearing the imperial symbols. Also of great value is the park with numerous examples of exotic flora such as the giant sequoia or the gingko biloba.

Piazza Unità d'Italia

One of Italy’s most beautiful and scenic squares, directly overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. Over 12,000 square metres in size, it is overlooked by numerous historical buildings, including the Palace of the Austrian Lieutenancy, the headquarters of the militia during the Habsburg rule, and the Fountain of the Four Continents, now unfortunately damaged due to numerous acts of vandalism.

Risiera di San Sabba

Of great historical interest is the Risiera di San Sabba, a sad site in the centre of the city as it was used by the Nazis as a concentration camp during World War II. Built in 1898 as a complex for husking rice, between 3,000 and 5,000 people lost their lives here, mostly political prisoners and Jews.

Il Frico

Frico is a typical Friulian dish made of cheese, potatoes and onion. Already mentioned in the 15th century by the patriarch Ludovico Trevisan’s cook, it can be served in two different forms, crispy or soft. It is a very popular dish in the culinary tradition of Friuli Venezia Giulia, to which two different events are dedicated in Carpaccio di Dignano and Flaibano.
