Goya: The Rebellion of Reason
Goya: The Rebellion of Reason. This is not yet another anthological exhibition dedicated to the Spanish master, to be added to those already held. The works on display describe his artistic evolution and the themes he dealt with, but the common denominators of the exhibition are Goya’s background and fantasy world, his experience of history, his attitude as an artist, his thinking and his ideology.
From 31 October 2023 to 3 March 2024 the Palazzo Reale will host the exhibition Goya: The Rebellion of Reason, an important opportunity to discover the Spanish master’s entire artistic career developed over a long period of history, saturated with changes and political, social and ideological events that gave rise to a new era of History.
Goya lived through the end of the Old Regime, the era of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, the Napoleonic wars, the absolutist restoration and exile.
The artist did not merely represent this turbulent era: he himself experienced a revolution in painting in tune with the historical complexity he experienced, a change he expressed through images.
Through the seven thematic sections of the exhibition, it will be possible to discover how the artist was able to transform painting into a revolutionary language, capable of breaking both with established rules and plastic systems and with the imitation of models. The painting of Goya’s mature years is a painting without models, it is the intimate and unrepeatable expression of an artist who creates art while revolutionising it with a new language.
The exhibition, curated by Victor Nieto Alcaide, was made possible thanks to the collaboration with a cultural institution of the highest level: the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
Open every day except Monday from 12.00 to 19.30.
